Calculate Your IFTA Mileage and Fuel Tax
Once you have organized your miles by state, the next step is combining your distance data with total fuel gallons purchased to calculate net tax-paid credits and debits. Instead of manual spreadsheets, use Awahe's free interactive tool to streamline your numbers:
| State / province 5 | Taxable miles | Tax-paid gallons | Tax rate $/gal | Taxable gallons | Net tax | Remove |
|---|
Taxable gallons = state miles ÷ fleet MPG. Net tax = (taxable gallons − tax-paid gallons bought in that state) × that state's rate. The tax rate fills in automatically when you pick a state, using the 3rd Quarter 2026 IFTA diesel tax-rate matrix. A negative number is a credit.
Estimate only — not tax advice. Your base jurisdiction's return, surcharges and current rates decide the final amount.

Sample IFTA Mileage Report
When preparing your quarterly fuel tax return, your total distance must be broken down jurisdiction by jurisdiction. Below is a simplified example of how motor carriers organize state-by-state mileage records:
| State / Jurisdiction | Truck #101 | Truck #102 | Truck #103 | Total Miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California | 520 | 410 | 320 | 1,250 |
| Nevada | 300 | 310 | 230 | 840 |
| Arizona | 220 | 180 | 220 | 620 |
| Texas | 510 | 470 | 450 | 1,430 |
| New Mexico | 120 | 140 | 120 | 380 |
| Total | 1,670 | 1,510 | 1,340 | 4,520 |
Note: This is an illustrative example. Actual reporting requires maintaining individual vehicle mileage logs, odometer readings, and fuel receipts for every member jurisdiction.
The basics
What Is an IFTA Mileage Report?
An IFTA mileage report is a chronological record of the total distance a commercial motor vehicle travels within each member jurisdiction (U.S. states and Canadian provinces) during a calendar quarter. Under IFTA regulations, interstate motor carriers submit a single quarterly tax return to their base jurisdiction. To complete this return accurately, fleet owners and owner-operators must calculate total miles traveled in every state, contrasting taxable miles against any eligible exempt miles (such as specific off-highway travel or un-apportioned trips, where permitted by local law).
Tracking
How Miles Are Organized by State
Calculating IFTA miles by state requires capturing boundary crossings for every commercial vehicle in your fleet. Key practices for clean mileage separation include:
GPS and ELD Integration
Modern electronic logging devices automatically log state boundary crossings, recording precise entry and exit coordinates.
Odometer Readings
Maintaining hubodometer or dashboard odometer readings at state lines as a physical backup to digital records.
Route Summaries
Consolidating individual trip reports into monthly and quarterly cumulative totals for each state jurisdiction.
Checklist

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IFTA mileage report?
An IFTA mileage report is an organized summary of the miles traveled by a commercial motor vehicle across each member state or province during a quarterly reporting period, used to file fuel tax returns.
How do I calculate IFTA miles by state?
You calculate state-by-state miles by reviewing electronic logging device (ELD) data, GPS tracking logs, or driver trip sheets to isolate the exact distance traveled within each separate IFTA jurisdiction.
Do I need mileage by state for IFTA?
Yes. Every quarterly IFTA tax return requires reporting total taxable and non-taxable miles broken down individually for every member jurisdiction where your trucks operated.
How are miles tracked for IFTA?
Miles are tracked using automated ELDs, onboard GPS telematics, state-line odometer logs, and driver trip reports that record state entry and exit points.
What are the IFTA diesel tax rates for 3rd quarter 2026?
IFTA diesel tax rates for 3rd quarter 2026 range from $0.190 per gallon in Oklahoma to $0.979 per gallon in California, with a U.S. average of about $0.368. Examples: Texas $0.200, Arizona $0.260, Illinois $0.738 and Pennsylvania $0.741. Kentucky and Virginia include a diesel surcharge. Use the rate lookup above and confirm on the IFTA, Inc. tax matrix before filing.
How is IFTA fuel tax calculated?
Divide total miles by total gallons to get fleet MPG. For each jurisdiction, divide its taxable miles by fleet MPG to get taxable gallons, subtract the tax-paid gallons you bought there, and multiply by that jurisdiction's tax rate. Add the results: a positive total is tax due and a negative total is a credit. The free IFTA calculator does this for you.
